Education & Learning

Education is a very important part of every young person’s development and must be considered as part of the integrated assessment, planning and recording framework set out by ‘Getting it Right for Every Child’.

Bachlaw’s Learning Centre can offer short term, long term or day education placements for young people who are not achieving their potential in mainstream schools.  The Learning Centre is a purpose built timber property set in our 30 acre rural location. Here we use the Curriculum for Excellence as the focal point in building, developing and reviewing our curriculum. We offer a specifically tailored, individualised set of learning experiences for each young person which will help them to achieve their potential and prepare them for adult life.

The pupils educated at Bachlaw Learning Centre are aged 8 to 18 and have a range of social and emotional needs; many have disengaged from traditional forms of learning. With use of a variety of teaching methods and a creative approach to delivering the curriculum, Bachlaw Learning Centre aims to re-engage these young people, help them take control of their learning and reintegrate them back into mainstream school. Bachlaw Learning Centre offers knowledge, understanding, skills and SQA accredited qualifications including National 1-5 qualifications in all the main areas of the curriculum. In addition to this, there are opportunities for pupils to gain work experience with local companies, rural skills qualifications, nautical and seamanship skills and ASDAN qualifications.

Bachlaw Learning Centre is not a residential school but embraces the principle of  24 hour learning from the Curriculum for Excellence, whereby every experience is seen as an opportunity for learning and young people are encouraged to become successful learners, responsible citizens, confident individuals and effective contributors.  The Learning Centre is open during school term time between the hours of 10.00am and 4.00pm.  Our schools holidays for the most part run in conjunction with Aberdeenshire Schools.  There may be differences with the in-service and occasional days.
Every young person placed with us will be supported to access an appropriate educational package.  For any enquiries please contact: James McLeay, Education & Training Manager, The Learning Centre, Upper Seaview, Cornhill, Aberdeenshire, AB45 2HJ.  Telephone 01466 771395.
