At Bachlaw we are mindful of the fact that all our young people will move onwards and upwards and out into the workplace. We encourage and help prepare them for this transition by allowing them to experience real work and earn wages. Bachlaw has much to offer our young people in this area and some ways are listed below:
Our young people can choose to be alongside our shepherds working with our flock of Soay Sheep. This includes animal husbandry and occasionally showing them at local agricultural shows, where we have won many rosettes. We also have a Friesian Horse, 2 Sports Colts, 2 Warmbloods, Cob and 7 Shetlands on site. Some of our young people are involved with looking after the horses and attend Pony Club where they take part in different events throughout the year including dressage and jumping. They also attend social events with the club.
We bought a new boat “Venture West” and sold our Creel boat “Red Hackle” which was massively popular and the young people can gain real experience and qualifications when out and about fishing for Crab, Lobster and Mackerel. The produce they land is sold at market and they are involved in the process from leaving the dockside to returning with produce for market.
We have over 30 acres of woodlands and grounds. With this much land and forestry there is always plenty to do. Our young people can learn all sorts of land and forestry management skills.
